In the first, or schooner period of the cup contests, extending from 1851 to 1881, there was no such clearly defined struggle of type against type as was witnessed in the later races of the second period, when the English yachtsmen received some consolation for their successive defeats in knowing that their American competitors, in the struggle to retain the "America" cup, have been forced to abandon the time-honored centerboard and adopt the lead-ballasted keel.
Mayflower was the second defender designed by Edward Burgess for the General Paine. She was built at George Lawley's yard at City Point that winter and was launched on May 6th. During its first trials, Puritan (1885) defeated it easily.

Painter Henry Bayley Snell was born at Richmond in England on September 29, 1858. He emigrated to the United States at the age of seventeen and studied at the Art Students League in New York. He married English born artist Florence Francis in 1888. It is believed that the couple first came to Bucks County to visit the Lathrop's in 1898.
