Stevens returned to this country from England in September, 1851, he brought with him the cup won by the America on the 22nd of August from the fleet of the Royal Yacht Squadron. It was the property of Commodore Stevens and his fellow-owners in the America — Edwin A. Stevens, George L. Schuyler, Hamilton A. Wilkes, J. Beekman Finlay, and Col. James A. Hamilton.

1929 : Sir Thomas Lipton, owner of Lipton Tea, decides to challenge for the America's Cup for what will be his fifth and final time. He commissions naval architect, Charles E. Nicholson with the task of designing Shamrock V. She is built at Camper and Nicholson Shipyard in Gosport, UK.

The trip was made via the Azores, and the fleet arrived off Sandy Hook in good shape after a passage of 15 days and 23 hours. The racers immediately went to the Erie Basin to get their racing spars on end and to refit. This was the first time a challenger had ever had another yacht on this side of the water to race against in her tuning-up spins, and it was, of course, expected to be a great help to the new boat and to enable her crew to know when they had her at top form.

Roderick Stephens, Jr. (1909-1995) was a renown yachtsman of the twentieth century. Born in New York City in 1909 Stephens began his sailing career off Cape Cod in 1919. In 1928 Roderick Stephens left Cornell University after one year to work up through the ranks at the Henry Nevins boat yard on City Island.
