When Commodore John C. Stevens returned to this country from England in September, 1851, he brought with him the cup won by the America on the 22nd of August from the fleet of the Royal Yacht Squadron. It was the property of Commodore Stevens and his fellow-owners in the America — Edwin A. Stevens, George L. Schuyler, Hamilton A. Wilkes, J. Beekman Finlay, and Col. James A. Hamilton.

August 15, 1895 : official measurements

The Defender and the Vigilant will be floated into the dry docks in the Erie Basin at high tide, about 7 o'clock to-morrow morning. The Defender will occupy Dock No. 1 and the Vigilant Dock No. 2. So any one who pays a visit to the basin will have a chance to compare the models of the two yachts.

Sandor Bernath was born in Hungary in 1892, but emigrated to the United States as a youth. In the early 1920’s, Bernath was an up and coming artist in New York City. He became a member of the American Watercolor Society and the Brooklyn Society of Modern Artists.

Born in Leicester, England, John Stobart began his artistic education at the Derby College of Art in 1946 and then studied at the Royal Academy between 1950-56. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1952 and was elected to the Royal Society of Marine Artists in 1956.
