Two of the fastest yachts that ever raced sailed for the America's Cup over the New-York Yacht Club course yesterday and, as has happened every time the cup has been contested for, victory remained with the Stars and Stripes.

The third "Deed of Gift"

Following the problems caused by the false waterline length of Thistle and alarmed by the growing British threat, the New York Yacht Club has decided to amend the Deed of Gift. This will be the beginning of a period of controversy that might have put an end to this story.

Thistle was the first of George Lennox Watson's four America's Cup challengers, designed by him. He went to the United States the previous year to watch the Cup races sailed by Galatea and Mayflower to understand the sea and wind conditions. He felt that the challenger was under-canvassed.

Sir Thomas Lipton bequeathed his collection of photographs, newspaper cuttings and memorabilia to the Mitchell Library where it is still housed. In 1999, the collection was showing signs of degradation and conservation was required. Unilever, who now own the Lipton brand, were approached and funded the conservation and digitisation costs.

John Pierpont "J.P." Morgan (April 17, 1837 – March 31, 1913) was an American financier and banker who dominated corporate finance and industrial consolidation during his time.
Morgan was born into the influential Morgan family to Junius Spencer Morgan (1813–1890) and Juliet Pierpont (1816–1884) in Hartford, Connecticut, and was raised there.

John C. Stevens (September 24, 1785 – June 13, 1857), first commodore of the N.Y.Y.C. was the son of Col. John Stevens, a contemporary of Fulton and Livingston, and like them a pioneer in the application of steam to the propulsion of vessels, he being the inventor County of the steam screw-propeller. He was educated at Columbia College, and married Miss Maria Livingston, a famous New York belle, who presided over his household with distinguished grace.

Richard Brydges Beechey (1808 – 14 March 1895) was an Anglo-Irish painter and admiral in the Royal Navy. Beechey was one of the 18 children of British painters Sir William Beechey and Ann Phyllis Jessop. His brothers included the British sea captain and painter Frederick William Beechey, the portraitist Henry William Beechey and the painter George Duncan Beechey.
