THE ROYAL YACHT SQUADRON REGATTA

Cowes, Friday Evening, Aug 22,1851.
The day that has been looked forward to here with so much anxiety during the present week, as pregnant with the most important results to the fame of the British Royal Yacht Squadron, has at length arrived, and a few hours will soon set at rest the many thousand conjectures as to whether the Royal Yacht Squadron is still Invincible, or whether that honoris henceforth to rest with our transatlantic brethren.

The America was fitted for her voyage across the Atlantic with sails belonging to the pilot-boat Mary Taylor.
She carried forty-five tons of ballast, her racing canvas and gear were stowed in her hold, she was well provisioned, and, according to the customs of the times she carried a stock of liquor for regular consumption, and with which to drink the healths of victors and vanquished on the other side.**

In canvassing the list of American boats fast enough to put against the Canadian challenger of 1881, the New York Yacht Club decided that the sloop Arrow was the most desirable. She was of David Kirby's build, but being owned by a non-member of the New York Yacht Club, Mr. Ross Winans, of Baltimore, she was not considered available.

William Butler Duncan Jr., known as Butler Duncan, was born in New York in 1853.
His father, William Butler Duncan was from Scotland, and completed his college education in this country. He became a banker in New York City and then President and Chairman of the Board of the Mobile & Ohio Railroad Company from 1874 until his death in 1912.

LITTLEWOOD Brian (U.K./St. Thomas) b. London, England. 1934. Educated at University College School, Hampstead, Brian learned architectural drawing as an apprentice with a City firm of surveyors. He attended art classes in 1972 and exhibited his work at local art shows.

Mr Boden was born in Bermuda. After completing his secondary education in England and university in the United States, he returned to Bermuda, and his first love, the sea. Mark and his family winter in their Ontario, Canada, home allowing their children to attend school, but still live on a 20 ton Venus gaff ketch in Bermuda for part of the year.
