Born in Bolton, Lancashire, England in 1829, this pivotal marine impressionist emigrated to the United States at the age of 15 where he became a pupil of Philadelphia marine artist James Hamilton. With his younger artist brother, Thomas, he returned to England and studied at the Royal Academy and received additional instruction at the Paris Academy, which built a strong European influence in his work.

Charles Parsons was a British-born artist who emigrated to America, where he painted in oil and watercolor as well as working in lithography. After being apprenticed to George Endicott, Charles Parsons worked for Nathaniel Currier, later Currier & Ives. He became head of the art department of Harper’s publishing firm in 1863.

Stephen Renard was born in Huddersfield in 1947. Although he was interested in art, and clearly gifted artistically from an early age, he chose to go to teachers training college at Liverpool University, concentrating on the sciences.
