James Bartholomew is a marine painter of great authority, skill and strength. Born in Portsmouth in 1962 he showed a fascination with painting from an early age and felt destined to choose a profession linked with the sea. Following his initial education on the Isle of Wight, he served seven years with the Royal Navy and subsequently the Royal Marines.
In 1993, having continued to develop his talent for painting, he returned to the Isle of Wight to pursue his ambition of becoming a professional artist. James' love of the sea, and sailing in particular, naturally led him to specialise in marine art.
He paints in two very distinct styles; firstly on a large scale in a very traditional way with a long established technique using oil paints and glazes on canvas, and secondly in a bold, colourful, impressionistic style in oils. His subjects vary from modern racing yachts through to the classic Big Class and J Class yachts from the early 1900's, to much older square riggers such as Cutty Sark and Mayflower. His modern paintings are often of Mediterranean ports.
James is an internationally acclaimed artist whose style and talent combine to make his pictures very popular. His work is held in great regard by the major auction houses in the UK. His paintings sell as soon as they are finished and this trend has led to the vast majority of his traditional work being now done to commission through Kendall's Fine Art. His order book is always very busy and the rapidly rising prices of his paintings are a reflection on how highly desirable and collectable his work has become.
